EIC Accelerator

Description

The EIC Accelerator is a flagship funding program under the European Union's Horizon Europe framework, designed to support high-impact, disruptive innovations from European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including startups and spin-outs. Unlike traditional venture capital firms, the EIC Accelerator offers a unique "blended finance" approach, combining grant funding with equity investments. This model aims to bridge the funding gap for deep tech companies that often face higher risks and longer development cycles, making them less attractive to conventional private investors in their early scaling phases.

The program specifically targets companies developing game-changing technologies and innovations with the potential to create new markets or significantly disrupt existing ones. Eligible projects typically demonstrate a high level of technological readiness, ranging from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5/6 up to TRL 9, indicating that the technology is already validated in a relevant environment or ready for commercial deployment. The grant component can provide up to €2.5 million (approximately $2.7 million) to cover innovation activities such as demonstration, prototyping, and testing. This non-dilutive funding is crucial for de-risking technologies and accelerating their market readiness.

Beyond the grant, the EIC Accelerator can provide equity investments of up to €15 million (approximately $16.2 million) through the EIC Fund, which is managed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group. This equity component is designed to help companies scale up rapidly, attract co-investors, and overcome market barriers. The EIC Fund acts as a patient investor, often taking minority stakes and aiming to crowd in private capital. With an overall budget of €10.1 billion for the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe for the 2021-2027 period, the Accelerator plays a pivotal role in fostering European technological sovereignty and global competitiveness by nurturing groundbreaking innovations from within the EU.
