EXIST is a prominent funding program initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), designed to foster entrepreneurship and spin-offs from universities and research institutions. Unlike traditional venture capital firms, EXIST provides non-dilutive grants, meaning it does not take equity in the startups it supports. Monthly stipends range from approximately €1,000 for students to €3,000 for scientists, complemented by additional funds for material expenses, which can reach up to €17,000 for teams, and coaching services. This support typically spans 12 months, enabling founders to focus entirely on their business concept.

For more complex and research-intensive projects, EXIST-Forschungstransfer offers substantial funding across two phases. Phase I focuses on the development of research results into marketable products or services, including feasibility studies and prototype construction, with grants potentially reaching up to €350,000 for a project. Phase II then supports the actual company formation and market entry. This two-phase approach allows for the development of high-tech and deep-tech ventures that require significant upfront investment in R&D.
